Foster A Fur Friend
Calling all animal lovers!!!
We are in desperate need of foster homes. At present we have many homeless and helpless critters that are waiting for a foster home.
We need to come together and do what we can to find these guys homes - be it foster homes or forever families. If you can take in one or two fur friends, please contact us asap. If not, please get the word out that we desperately need fosters. Thank you.
Becoming a Foster Family
Becoming a foster family is quick and easy. Simply fill out our Foster Form and Agreement and have a quick home check done before being approved, and you’re in! We do our best to cater to our foster families, as they are our life line. We provide you with the start up pet supplies and you provide the love and safety the animal so desperately needs and deserves. When you are running low on food and/or litter, you simply call one of our representatives, and we will provide the items free of charge to you.
Some of our foster families choose to provide the food for the animal in their care, and we appreciate this so very much, though it is not required of you as a foster family, but it is another great way to help out.

Fostering Policies
(Policies are subject to modification by the Steinbach Humane Society Founders.)
- The applicant agrees to provide the animal with a good and safe home with proper shelter, care and attention. The animal (referring to dogs) is not to ride loose in the back of pick-up trucks, is not to be tethered for more then 8 hours, and the tether must be 6 meters or more. When the animal is outdoors (referring only to dogs), it shall be monitored by the foster person(s). The applicant will not allow the animal (referring only to dogs) to roam unsupervised when fenced areas are not present, unless given permission by an S.H.S. representative. The animal is not to be left in a small kennel or pen for time spans exceeding a ten hour period.
- The applicant agrees not to engage in selling, giving away or trading the animal. Should the applicant at any time be unable to keep or care for the animal, the applicant will contact and return the animal to an S.H.S. Representative at an agreed upon time and location. The animal may not be transferred to another owner or shelter without the expressed consent of S.H.S. The applicant may not euthanize an animal belonging to the S.H.S. or turn the animal in to an animal control centre. S.H.S. reserves all rights in reclaiming the animal, should we find the foster home to be unfit for any reason and by violation of the agreed upon contract.
- The applicant will not change the foster animal’s name in any way while the animal is in foster care, as a name is given to each animal prior to going into foster care, and it is not the right of the foster applicant to change it unless permission is given by an S.H.S. representative.
- Should the applicant be away from the home for an extended period of time for a vacation or any other reason, the applicant is responsible for finding a suitable temporary caregiver for the animal. Before arrangements are finalized, SHS is to be notified, and the temporary caregiver is to be screened by SHS.
- If the applicant is renting their current residence, a signed letter from the land lord is required to specify what type and number of animals are allowed in the building.
- It is the responsibility of the applicant to notify an S.H.S. representative immediately if any and all medical needs of a foster pet.
- If the applicant wishes to adopt the foster pet in their care, they must complete the same adoption process required of any other person(s) wishing to adopt a pet through the S.H.S. It will also be necessary to sign and comply with the S.H.S. Adoption Contract
- The applicant agrees to not violate any federal, provincial or local laws or ordinances with the animal.
- All SHS foster applicants will be reviewed and asked to reapply annually
- S.H.S. retains sole rights to screen, review, approve and disapprove any and all applicants who may apply to adopt the pet in foster care
- S.H.S. assumes all financial responsibility for routine medical care of the foster pet while the animal is in foster care, unless the foster pet needs medical care for an injury caused during lack of supervision by the care taker.
- S.H.S. is not liable for any damages to persons or property.
- S.H.S. makes no warranties or statements regarding the animal’s health or temperament. It is agreed and understood by the applicant that while every effort is made to provide accurate history and assessment of a animal, S.H.S. does not warrant an animal regarding medical status or behaviour or disposition. It is further agreed that environmental changes may effect and change the temperament of the foster animal and that S.H.S. has no liability or responsibility of any nature regarding later defects with the animal, or injuries or damage to any person or property that may be caused by the foster animal. The applicant agrees to indemnify and hold harmless S.H.S. and its members or representatives against any and all claims of any injury or property damage to the applicant or anyone else.
- In the event this contract is breached by the applicant, it is agreed the applicant shall pay $150.00 as damages. Payment of these damages shall not excuse the applicant from returning the animal to S.H.S. and does not include court costs or attorney’s fees as set forth.
- In the event that S.H.S. employs an attorney, because of a violation of this agreement, it is agreed the applicant shall pay the attorney’s fees and court costs that may be deemed reasonably necessary.
