DJ

Last week we rescued 2 orphaned 2 week old kittens. There was a male and a female. Founder/President Karen Pruden has been dedicating her time and energy to keeping these tiny little ones alive and healthy. Unfortunately DJ the little boy has passed away. He was so small and underdeveloped. His suckling relex was so poor as well. We will miss him very much.
His sister is doing quite well though and our hopes are high for her survival.
Captain

Captain is one of a litter of four orphaned kittens who’s mom was hit by a car. These little sweeties have had to grow up in a hurry, and are now just waiting for their forever homes where they can just be kittens. We don’t know too much about these little ones, butwe’ll keep updating the posts as we get to know them better.
Licorice

Licorice is a little female kitten who was found on the Biovail doorstep on Sep 30, shivering, scared and hungry. One of the security guards had spotted him on the yard the night before, so this poor little guy had quite the adventure. He is about 6 weeks old now, he loves people and he is awesome with children. Right now he lives in a foster home with Oranji. He is a little smaller than normal but he is a big sweetheart. He is hoping to find his forever home soon. Could it be you he’s been waiting for? A 7 Year Old’s Gift From The Heart
July 10, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
On Friday July 3rd, this sweet girl presented us with a $75 donation. How does a 7 year old make $75 you ask. Well, for her 7th birthday she asked her guests to bring money for the SHS instead of a birthday gift for her. What an amazing and selfless act! The ironic thing is that June marked our one year anniversary of operating the Steinbach Humane Society. Her generosity litterally brought tears to our eyes. So we met at The Old Country Vet to show her exactly where her money was going. We awarded her with a plaque, and she got to meet Dr. David Millar, who is the veterinarian who worked many hours to save the life of Lulu, one of our special case kittens who time and time again had to be rushed to the vet for emergancy attention. It was that same kitten who this wonderful girl and her family adopted. Lulu is now healthy, spoiled and loved by this amazing family, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you again and God bless you. You will always be special to us.

This morning between 7am-9am the interview between Corny Remple and us aired on our local radio station Mix 96.7. We were pretty nervous, but Corny made us feel comfortable and at ease, and it ended up going really well. Clips will continue to air throughout the day. We talked about our organization and how we are doing our best to make a differance.
$30 Adult Cat Adoption Fee For July
July 6, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
We have no more room to take in anymore cats at this time. All our cat foster homes are full, but the need for us to take in more cats remains. This is a really tough spot to be in, as our hearts are in this organization and having to turn even one cat away due to lack of space is a horrible feeling.
For this reason, we are keeping our selected cat prices at $30 for the month of July, in order to get these sweet cats adopted out to the forever homes they deserve and open up spots for the cats who are desperately needing to come in to our program. The following cats have a $30 adoption fee: Bob, Mondo, Shivva, Tiny and Fluffy - they all have their adult vaccinations. The adoption fee covers first shots, deworming, vet health check, spay/neuter surgery and ID ear tattoo.
Please consider adopting one of these wonderful felines and giving them the safe forever home they have been waiting for. Thank you so much.
July 6 - A Day Of Rest
July 6, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Today was a very uneventful day as far as the media frenzy goes. It was nice. Steinbach is so much more then the recent drama in the news. We’re culture, history, small businesses, large businesses, friendly smiles and a hand shake, We’re friends and family, food and fun. Let’s take a moment to remember that this is our city and we should be proud of it. Sure mistakes and the likes will be made, but we choose to live here and it’s a good choice. Steinbach is my safe place. It’s my stomping ground, where I graduated and where I grew up and am raising my family. Things happen here that I’m not proud of, but Steinbach as a whole is still a really great city that I’m proud to call home.

July 3 - Steinbach Carilon Reports
July 4, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Here is the blurb taken from the Carillon website. It made the front page of the actual hard copy newspaper.
City takes pounding over animal control
The City of Steinbach was at the centre of media controversy this week over its practice of shooting unclaimed dogs at the city pound. Ironically, city council was scheduled to review the city’s animal control bylaw on Tuesday. While possible changes were discuss and could come in a revised bylaw later this year, no one suggested specific changes to the current method of euthanasia, which is approved by the Canadian Council for Animal Care.
We sent them our statment yesterday, so I’m not sure if it will make the next week’s issue of the Carillon or if they will print it at all. We also gave it to our local radio stations. So we’ll wait and see. It seems that a lot of the media is looking to us to pick a side and fight on this issue. Instead, we are letting them know where we stand but in a diplomatic manner which doesn’t taint the name of Steinbach. Everyone makes mistakes. The city of Steinbach is just being held accountable because they are in a more dominant position and we look to them to keep peace and guidance.
July 2 - National Post Investigates
July 3, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
This morning we were contacted by Matthew Coutts of the National Post for an interview. Here is the statment we released to them. We will update this post with a link to the story on their website when it is available.
In response to the latest news story about the dog shootings in Steinbach by our local Animal Control Officer, we the Steinbach Humane Society do not agree with the method of shooting a dog as euthanization. We understand in certain cases this method is needed, as in the case of injured, rabid and generally dangerous wildlife, or a rabid dog. We believe that in those cases it should be performed by a trained professional.
We have been doing our best for the last year to gain a contract with our city so that we can join our existing ACO in order to make sure that the animals get the best treatment and a chance to get adopted by loving forever homes or reunited with their owners if the animals have been lost. We would make sure that the pets get vet health checked, vaccinated, dewormed and tattooed by a licenced veterinarian before putting them into foster care and finding them loving forever homes. If an animal has to be euthanized we have it performed by a licenced Veterinarian in compliance with the Steinbach animal bylaws. It’s a slow process, but we’re not giving up. The city needs us and we need the city.
