“Homeless pets in Winnipeg have a new place to call home. D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre opened a new shelter in the city Saturday. The 7000 square foot building is the largest no kill shelter in Western Canada. The shelter cost about $500,000. Some of the money came from grants and some from donations from people who share the organization’s passion for saving animals. The shelter’s founder, D’Arcy Johnston has a soft spot for furry creatures. Saving animals has become his life.

“I worked as an emergency technician in an emergency clinic where too many animals were being euthanized,” he told CTV News “I decided to start taking them home; but by the end of the year I had 30 cats in my house.”

In 2001 Johnston expanded his rescue operation and opened D’arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre (D’Arcy’s A.R.C.) on Portage Avenue. Seven years later the demand had outgrown that place too. He may in part have a dog named Fipper to thank for the latest expansion at 730 Century Street. The dog’s face was burned by chemicals. D’Arcy’s A.R.C. took her in and nursed her back to health. Fipper’s story tugged on many hearts and prompted a lot of donations for the new facility.

The new shelter is completely animal friendly, with litter boxes made to look like homes, private rooms to cuddle adoptable pets, and a fresh-air dog run. The shelter rescues about 1000 animals every year, and now with more space that number is expected to grow.

If you would like to help by volunteering, fostering animals, or making a donation to the organization, visit the D’Arcy’s A.R.C. website.

Our Building!

September 26, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

We officially have our Steinbach Humane Society location!!! This is scary and so exciting for us at the same time. We hope to have our grand opening in early November, but for now we just wanted to share this amazing news with all of you.

We are not currently holding any animals in our building. For now we will be working on the renovations. Even when the building is renovated, our goal is still to continue with our Fostering Furry Friends program. This program is designed to benefit both the animals in care as well as their future forever family. Foster homes provide the animals with exercise, socialization and the discipline and training he or she needs and desires.

The building itself will be primarily our intake/quarantine center and office and grooming area. Here is where we will be able to set up meeting with prospective adopters and animals in care.

We invite you to come out and lend a hand in our renovation adventure. Feel free to contact us for more information.

The Need

September 23, 2008 by admin · Leave a Comment

To date we the Steinbach Humane Society have 23 cats and kittens and 10 dogs and puppies, for a grand total of 33 animals. That’s 33 animals that we need to have in foster care, and that doesn’t include the ever growing waiting list. We do have our building, which is just absolutely wonderful, but we still need to renovate it to suit our and the animal’s needs. We will be taking this and next month to do whatever needs to be done in the building in order to be able to operate out of it. For now though, we are really counting on the support of the community. We need foster homes, donations of time, items and money. We are so very thankful to everyone who supports us and/or donates. This wouldn’t be possible without you. Thank you.  Today we have 33 animals.  Tomorrow…..who knows.

Zoe is an adorable Shepherd cross female puppy. She is very smart and loves to be held and cuddled. She loves to play and run and is at the perfect age where she will easily learn rules, tricks and boundaries. She came to us with a sad start in life. She was abandoned with her 9 siblings in a cardboard box to fend for themselves. Luckily we were contacted and rescued her. She will make a wonderful family pet and playmate. Contact us to come and meet Zoe today.

Sampson is a sweet little Shepherd cross pudgster puppy with lots of love and joy to spread. As his name suggests, he is the biggest of his litter and has the personality to go with it. He’s a clumsy clown. Sampson loves people and other animals too! Sampson would make a wonderful fur friend for anyone, because at this age he is eager to please and easily learn. Please consider adopting him into your family and give him his forever home!

Sampson was adopted today and we are so happy for him. He went to a wonderful family with lots of love and attention for him. We will miss him but are glad for this new happy chapter in his life. Way to go Sam!

September 20, 2008 - Buddy is a Jack Russell who was found last week. We had him on our site under the Lost & Found section. Today he was reunited with his owners Mike & Erica Lenton, there 4 children. Alex, Devin, Brady and Caylen. Buddy who was so calm and quiet since the day we picked him up was so happy to see them, giving kisses and smiling. What a sight to see!

Sugar

September 18, 2008 - Sugar was laid to rest late last night.  She was a quiet, sweet, young mother cat who came to us as a stray with a litter of 4 kittens. The kittens were only a few weeks old when they arrived. Sugar was a wonderful mother and did her best to care for her babies. Unfortunately, the combination of her worms and nursing kittens, she passed away of shock, exhaustion and having the worms and kittens rob her of vital nutrients. She will be missed. Please spay or neuter your pets.

He’s a chubby little bundle of affection and joy looking for a forever family where he can run and play. He along with his 9 siblings were abandoned in a cardboard box at about 4 weeks of age. So Brutis is in need of his forever home to get the love he wants and needs. If you can give him his forever home please come by and adopt him into your family!
