Thank you Parade Volunteers
August 9, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Thanks to all our volunteers for coming out to walk the parade route with our adoptable dogs. And a big thank you also to Fairway Ford for loaning us a beautiful truck to use for the morning of the parade. We certainly accomplished our goal of bringing more awareness to the community about the Steinbach Humane Society. Thanks again.

News Article on our ACO practices
April 13, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
This was posted on steinbachonline.com website as the main story.
Steinbach’s new Animal Control Bylaw is a good start. That’s the word from a local animal welfare advocate. Shanyn Silinski is thankful gunshot euthanasia is no longer considered an acceptable practice. However, she says people are still concerned with the 72 hour hold on animals and that the city has no way of telling people how they can retrieve or re-home animals. She would like to see the city use its website, the Steinbach Humane Society and Facebook to re-home animals rather than putting them down. Silinski adds while the new bylaw addresses animals like chickens, tigers and snakes, it speaks little on cats and how the city plans to handle the cat population. As well, she hopes the animal control officer will consult with an animal protection officer or veterinarian before deciding whether or not to euthanize an animal.
We are hoping to work with our Animal Control Officer and members of City Hall to address any further concerns and issues in this area. Things are looking up!

GOOD NEWS!!!
March 26, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
City Counsel is currently working on updating the animal control bi-laws. Two of the items they are addressing are pet waste clean up, and the euthanization methods currently practised by our Animal Control Officer. The methods will include euthanisation by gun when needed. I guess that would mean, situation involving a rabid dog and aggressive wild animals.
This had been a touchy hot topic for the last 6+ months, since CJOB’s interview with our current ACO. I’m happy to see City Counsel taking a pro-active approach in this.

Letter

Letter to City Manager Jack Kahler:
Good morning,
I just have a few quick questions.
1 - When does the contract between the city of Steinbach and John Klassen expire?
2 - When the animal control contract does expire, are there any plans to hire the Steinbach Humane Society for the animal control position?
The reason I’m asking is because these are the two most asked questions that we as the Steinbach Humane Society Representers face. We do tell people that we have a positive relationship with the city, but that answer doesn’t seem to be good enough anymore. People look to us to be doing way more for the city, and we can’t because of the rules in place that tie our hands. If we had a contract with the city, we could offer so many more services. We’d love to have 2 ACOs/APOs, offer discount or free spay/neuter days, offer obedience classes, info seminars, etc. This is our city and we are dedicated to improving it in any way possible, but we do need the city’s help. If there are plans in place to set up a contract for the position of Animal Control, we do need to know so that we can be prepared. We wish to be responsible and proactive to benefit our city. Our intent is to work with the city, but we do need your help, and we need answers.
Thank you for your consideration in this area. I do appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Lisa Rogal

Cork

Cork is the newest SHS fur friend. I had him at my place for a while yesterday and he was wonderful. He’s very smart and eager to please. He knows the commands “sit” and “shake a paw”. He likes to go for walks, but is not perfect on the leash. When Cork in the house, he’s very calm. He’s not a barker or a junper, and loves kids. When he’s in the house, he likes to be able to look outside. He’s an all-around good boy with good manners and great potential.
What Is A Lotto Tree?
February 10, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Since people have heard that we are having a lotto tree at our fund raiser this weekend, we are getting the same question asked over and over. To clear up any remaining confusion, Lauren our Creative Consultant has made up a poster to explain the concept. There will be lotto tickets attached to a decorative tree. You buy raffle tickets to win the chance to take home all the lotto tickets. Think of how much you could win!!!
Feline Fosters Needed
December 2, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
We need feline foster homes asap. We are in such a desperate situation. There are more cats/kittens who need us then we have homes for. Our current feline foster homes are maxed and we can’t save anymore kitties without your help. Please please contact us if you can help at all. If you have room for one cat or kitten, it would help so much.

Updating Steinbach’s Animal Control Bylaws
November 3, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
This is taken from the steinbachonlie.com website.
“A new Animal Control Bylaw is being drafted at Steinbach City Hall. Mayor Chris Goertzen says it will modernize an old document by adding such things as restrictions on dangerous and exotic animals. Meantime, he adds one of the more interesting ideas is to allow people to have 4 chickens per residence. This is common in some larger urban centres where people keep chickens for fresh eggs. Roosters are not allowed. Mayor Goertzen says they’ve kept the chicken provision in the draft for now and will see what kind of feedback it gets. The bylaw is still in the development stages.”
The city manager Jack Keihler has asked for our (SHS) input in this matter, and we are working together to improve our city’s animal bylaws. We’re very pleased and honoured to be part of the progress.
